Pharos Direct Printing

Using the Pharos Direct printing process our customers can print jobs that will print from a targeted Copier Program device after authenticating their identity and payment method on their computer. Due to potential security issues resulting from unattended prints, we advise Copier Program customers to use Pharos Direct printing only when they have direct access to non-public devices.

This method is unavailable for Linux users; there is no popup software enabling identity and payment authentication for Linux devices. Please see our Pharos Secure printing page for instructions on how to use Pharos Secure print for Linux.

Users should NOT use ITS’s “Service Now” ticketing system for problems with Pharos Direct printing. ITS has little to do with enabling Copier Program customers to use Pharos Direct printing, and any request for help through “Service Now” will take longer to fulfill than if the customer contacted Copier Program directly. If you have problems using your Pharos Direct printing process, please contact the Copier Program at x9-5799 or copierprogram@ucsc.edu.

Mac/Windows

Pharos Direct printing from the Mac is similar to that from a Windows computer, in that the same number of popup windows are launched for the same reasons. There are minor keystroke differences between the two versions of the popups, which will be detailed below.

The following instructions assume the Pharos Direct print driver specific to the Copier Program device to which you wish to print has been correctly installed on your computer. If you need help to have the driver installed, click here for instructions on how to get installation help. Once the custom print driver for Pharos Direct is properly installed, and after readying your print job, send the <Print> command from your application. The standard print driver window launches:

Select the specific Pharos Direct printer you’d like to use from the “Printer:” pulldown menu. Set up any options you need from the “Copies & Pages” screen; to get to all setup options, click on the “Copies & Pages” pulldown menu. Those specifically for the device are found in “Printer Features”. Once you’ve set up your options so your document will print how you would like, press <Print>. The Pharos Direct identity popup window launches:

Enter your CruzID (the first part of your email, before the @ sign, is your CruzID) in the top text field. DO NOT enter your full email address; your job will fail to print if you enter your full email address. Enter your PIN in the bottom text field. Press <Continue>. The Pharos Direct payment window launches:

If you are a Mac user, place your cursor in the text box marked “FOAPAL or Student Account”, and press return (on your keyboard). If you are a Windows user, place your cursor in the text box marked “FOAPAL or Student Account”, enter an asterisk (*), and press enter (on your keyboard). Your FOAPAL/Student Billing System options will show as found in the “Search Results” text box.

Highlight the payment line you wish to charge for your print job, and push <Print>. Alternatively, you can double-click on the payment line you wish to charge for your print job; either way the print stream will be sent directly to the Pharos Direct printer chosen. The job should print out immediately (unless someone else is printing or otherwise using the Copier Program device).

If you have problems using the Pharos Direct printing process, please contact the Copier Program at x9-5799 or copierprogram@ucsc.edu.
